Built in 312 BC by Appius Claudius Caecus, it operated as an important trade and military link between Rome and Southern Italy. With sturdy stone paving, drainage, and milestones, this iconic road witnessed historic events, serving as a path for triumphal marches and cultural exchange. It was fringed with impressive tombs and monuments, many of which still stand today.
