Sculpture Stats

Each waxwork on display has been crafted with the utmost attention to detail. Waxworks can take up to 6 months to create, and cost about $300,000. Countless measurements and photographs are taken, 2,400 lbs of wax is used, and up to 100,000 hairs are individually inserted on each head. Before Madame Tussauds London opens in the morning, each waxwork is checked by two separate maintenance teams. Hair is washed, clothes are changed, and make-up is touched up regularly.

Elegant Execution

Madame Marie Tussaud was imprisoned during the French Revolution, and came to prominence when she began to make death masks of guillotined aristocrats. In 1803, she journeyed to London and exhibited many of her waxworks in Baker Street. The attraction proved very popular, giving visitors the chance to see the faces behind the famous names they'd heard so much about. Although today's waxworks focus on a somewhat less macabre subject, the appeal of Madame Tussauds London endures. There are now over 21 Madame Tussauds museums worldwide, and London's is the original.
