History

The Altar of the Fatherland is a large votive altar dedicated to the Italian nation located in the heart of the Vittoriano. In fact, the altar stands on the first terrace and is sometimes identified with the entire monument. Designed by Giuseppe Sacconi, it was decorated by the Lombard sculptor Angelo Zanelli (1879-1942).

What You'll See

The highpoint of the Altar of the Fatherland boasts spectacular views of the City of Rome. The Altar is enormous – 81m in height and 135m wide, it dominates Piazza Venezia and is an integral part of Rome’s skyline from any viewpoint. The design is of a huge covered portico with classical columns and a monumental gateway at each end. The open portico is set on a sweeping staircase of 243 steps which lead to the so-called Altar of the Fatherland, which is topped by a statue of the goddess Roma (beneath lies the crypt of the unknown soldier).
