About the TCL Chinese Theatre
Originally named Grauman's Chinese Theatre after showman Sid Grauman, the theatre was designed in the exotic revival architectural style, and opened in May 1927. Distinctive features include the red Chinese pagoda exterior, with dragons featured on the the façade and copper roof, and authentic Ming Dynasty guardian lions guarding the main entrance. The theatre is famous for its concrete forecourt which features the signatures, footprints, and handprints of stars from the 1920s to the present day. It is also the location for many film premieres, including Star Wars in 1977, and has hosted three Academy Awards. The TCL Chinese Theatre guided walking tour begins in the historic Forecourt of the Stars. You'll be escorted into the Theatre's lobby by your guide, who will take you back in time to the golden age of Hollywood via an exhibition of famous costumes, props, artworks and the luxuriant architecture of the theatre itself. Following this you'll enter the main 932-seat theatre, home to North America's largest IMAX screen, where you'll see a short film by TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz. Your guide will take you out into the famous forecourt and share secrets and stories about some of the most iconic-cemented hand and footprints, including Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne and Shirley Temple. You'll also see Grauman’s Gallery featuring photographs from the theatre’s illustrious 80-year history.
