About Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon was the plantation home of George Washington, the first President of the United States, and his wife, Martha Washington. Situated on the banks of the Potomac River, this 21-room mansion was built in the Palladian style in 1734, and has been restored to its atmospheric 18th-century glory. Inside you'll spot period decor, furniture, portraits and posessions of the Washington family. The grounds have been similarly revived - you'll see authentic gardens, stables, paddocks, various buildings, a forest trail, and the tomb of George and Martha Washington. An on-site museum and education center displays Washington's survey equipment, weapons, and clothing, as well as his dentures. Note that the Spirit of Mount Vernon tour allows three and a half hours to explore the home and gardens.
