About Monticello

Located just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, Monticello is the historic former homestead of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Due to its neoclassical architecture and historic significance, the property has been designated a National Historic Landmark, and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The US nickel even features a depiction of Monticello on one side. Monticello was developed as a plantation by Jefferson when he inherited the land from his father at age 26. Using the labor of enslaved Africans, Jefferson cultivated tobacco and wheat at Monticello, while famously achieving and innovating in discliplines like law, politics, philosophy, languages, architecture, mechanics and more. Today, Monticello's period architecture and decoration remains in reflection of the personal ideas and ideals of Jefferson.

About The Tour

Operated by Gray Line Tours, this full-day Monticello Tour departs from Washington DC's Union Station at 8:00am. The outward coach journey takes about 3 hours. You'll make a pit-stop at Michie's Tavern for a traditional southern-style buffet lunch and to check out artisan souvenirs. Next is your visit to Monticello, where you'll enjoy a guided tour and free time to explore the pavilions and gardens. Lastly you'll visit the nearby visitor center before journeying back to Washington DC. The tour duration is about 11 hours. All coaches feature air-conditioning, restrooms, and a certified Gray Line tour guide. The tour includes all admission fees, but lunch and gratuities are not included.

On the way out to Monticello, you'll enjoy the sights of the lush Virginia countryside as your driver shares interesting facts about the area and points out landmarks. The Monticello Full-Day Tour is operated by Gray Line Tours. The tour departs at 8:00am from the Bus Terminal Level at Washington DC's Union Station (50 Massachusetts Ave NE). Please check in at the Gray Line office by 7:45am at the latest to guarantee ridership on the tour. Once the tour departs, guests cannot join along the route. Tours operate between April 2 - November 29, on Tuesday & Friday ONLY. Please note that lunch, optional gratuities and hotel pick-up/drop-off are not included.
