"Fiaker" comes from the french word, fiacre, which references the Parisian street, Rue de Saint Fiacre, where the horse-drawn four-wheeled carriages were commonly available for hire. In the 1700s, Vienna's "Janschky" coaches were renamed "fiakers".
Between 1860-1900 there were more than 1,000 fiakers on the road in Vienna. Charismatic drivers were valued for both their singing performances and their discretion, particularly when carrying aristocratic gentlemen and their mistresses.
