LAMBETH PALACE - bus stop outside Lambeth Palace Imperial War Museum, Museum of Garden History

The Imperial War Museum

No more than a ten minute walk from this stop is the Imperial War Museum. This is a major historical and educational venue which depicts the history of the involvement of Britain and the Commonwealth in conflicts and wars over the centuries.
Founded in 1917 to commemorate the generation that had given their lives in the Great War, the Imperial War Museum was originally located at a site inside the Imperial Institute. In 1936 the Imperial War Museum was permanently located in Lambeth Road in a building which had originally been the Bethlam Royal Hospital. This specialised in psychiatric disorders, and became popularly known as ‘Bedlam’.
The Imperial War Museum is a networked organisation spread over five sites in London and Manchester. The Lambeth site features exhibits consisting of military vehicles, weapons, war memorabilia, a photographic archive, and an art collection of 20th century paintings and photographs.

Lambeth Palace

For 800 years The Archbishop of Canterbury has had his official residence at Lambeth Palace. With its Tudor brick gateway and towers it is one of the most historical and recognisable buildings on this part of our London bus tour. The Palace is not open to the general public although interested parties such as theological students can, by prior arrangement organise tours inside the building.

The Museum of Garden History

Close to the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lambeth Palace stands the Museum of Garden History. Housed in the deconsecrated St Mary-at-Lambeth church, the museum is believed to have been the very first in the world dedicated to gardening. Covering all aspects of cultivation and its history, from large formal gardens in the French 18th century style to the modest back yard, the Garden Museum is a quintessentially British concept and those with a passion for horticulture will find something interesting here.
