No more than a ten minute walk from this stop is the Imperial War Museum. This is a major historical and educational venue which depicts the history of the involvement of Britain and the Commonwealth in conflicts and wars over the centuries.
Founded in 1917 to commemorate
the generation that had given their lives in the Great War, the Imperial War Museum was originally located at a site inside the Imperial Institute. In 1936 the Imperial War Museum was permanently located in Lambeth Road in a building which had originally been the Bethlam Royal Hospital. This specialised in psychiatric disorders, and became popularly known as ‘Bedlam’.
The Imperial War Museum is a networked organisation spread over five sites in London and Manchester. The Lambeth site features exhibits consisting of military vehicles, weapons, war memorabilia, a photographic archive, and an art collection of 20th century paintings and photographs.
